The Gilded Heart

Keeping up appearances, I wrap my heart up into a tight cocoon
Where no one can pierce its inner core
I maintain a cool exterior and pretend like nothing really affects me
Then I walk home, up to my room, close the door, light a candle and the tears pour

Loving others means allowing yourself to get hurt
In fact, it means putting your heart in a place where it very easily could get crushed
Simultaneously it means opening oneself up to some of the greatest pleasures known to man

Placing one's heart inside a steel trap, hidden from all the world, though
it will never flourish the way it was intended
Pushing to make others distant who have crushed, burned, bruised
the heart fears another brush with the dangers of relationship

We're given such great power, to hurt or to heal
and with the capacity to quench the spirits of others, we're given great responsibility
Meanwhile, we're given the freedom to release the heart from its gilded frame and let it bloom

We desperately cling to what was never ours to begin with...
