Veiled Inheritance

the raindrop...
slides softly down my nose to touch the ground
It's dreary, gray, not yet the weekend

Waiting...
for I don't know what anymore
or perhaps more accurately...
yearning for a restoration that cannot yet be

the more ideas and theories spin round my brain, the less they enthrall
there was a time when all felt fresh and new,
each day an adventure of endless possibility

perhaps the days still are
but those fleeting joys aren't enough anymore
actually, they never were

an illusion...
a glimpse...
a glimmer...
of something more
but never the thing itself

The thing
is not something to be grasped
or taken
it can only be received
oh, to behold it,
to drink from its founts
but alas, not yet

I dream of green pastures
with no end
A river
whose waters are crystal clear
and sparkle like diamonds
its falls crest atop a precarious peak
but there is no danger

In my mind's eye
friendships that do not fade
old men who never tire
at last the artist can finally depict an image in its full truth

no more masks
no pretenses
no disenchantment

not exactly what one might call sheer bliss
perhaps better put, fullness of being
at last…

to think it's not just an illusion,
the stuff of children's stories,
of whose memory I lament.

it is pulsing
within and without
coursing through the being of the universe

to not want or need the next thing
because you have it all and more

a flicker in the distance
on the matchstick sunset
reminds me it is looming.

like the big dipper
that shows its face on each clear night
it will surely come.

as surely as
the birds fly south in the winter,
the buds resurface in the spring

the very thought is moving me
i am moved for it is there
so many things i doubt, but not this

freedom.
chains unhinged.
a bright morning glow of new tomorrow.
coloured reflection is becoming face to face.

A Broken Heart Needs More than Salve

-rough uncut version of a new piece i've been working on

"A Broken Heart Needs More than Salve"

Some people can go through life pretending like everything is candy.
I can't.

Reality tells a different story: children crying, people hurting
Things fall apart around me as I sit under the charcoal sky
the chair is rusting, the ice melting, the ink fading

As time wears on, so do we
Our bodies grow old, frail, and tired
Toe touches on the trampoline
or careless swims in the ocean become nearly impossible

We are gripped by fear, responsibilities, expectations
A heavy anchor begins to tie us to this place
when once, we floated
above like a hot air balloon

We stop dreaming because the dreams don't seem to ever come true
We stop loving, for fear of yet another heartbreak

The clouds part above us
revealing an orange and purple masterpiece
that these days we barely notice

Cynicism. Near despair. Longing
All the makings of a great movie,
but nothing we ever wanted

Rewind the tape to 1990...
backyard barbeque steaming up the neighborhood
bright cherry sled rushing down a freshly powdered slope
Saturday playdates that seemed to last for years

What happened to the innocence, the exuberance, the wonder?
Oh, the wonder
the wonder of a gurgling seashell on a pebbled shore
the wonder of first love walking home from the bus stop
the wonder in bright young eyes staring at a sparkling night sky

The places we'll go, the people we'll see
Whole continents of new world wonders yet to explore

Is there a way to reclaim our imaginations,
our unabashed curiosities,
our fearless abilities to speak our minds?

Oh little child, I want you back...

I see you in the little boy rollerblading by my office in the afternoon sun,
grasping a nearby pole and spinning around til you fall and scrape your knees

I see you in the wide-eyed wonder of new relationships,
tasting a freshness and a joy you thought you'd never feel again

I see you like a new moon rising every morning,
as a mist steams off the mountaintops across from my apartment
like some Elysian Field coming to enrapture my soul with delights

Today, I see you in five little birds
with roasted coffee backs, ivory stripes, and blue speckles of distinction
They dance together on a brick ledge
without a care in the world

Glazed cataracted eyes, peel back your lids of disbelief
Just ahead a smile creeps out from pursed red lips of trepidation
A slumbering butterfly unfurls its resplendent wings
The icicles of winter melting with a hint of spring in the air

The wonder never disappeared...
we just stopped looking for it.

My love, wait. Listen. Savor.
No more grasping

A broken heart needs more than salve
Can you imagine all things made new?
