the lark ascending
tonight, there are many things on my mind
but i would like to briefly share one of my favorite things as i think about life, beauty, purpose, sadness,
and the wild mix of things that make up life
the song is called "the lark ascending" by vaughan williams
it is an instrumental piece, but it is AMAZING
i can't say that i don't like other classical/instrumental songs
so if you aren't into that type of thing, you might not love it
but i personally love the ups and downs, the crescendos
fast then slow
lightly dinging bell, then loud violin
anyway, let me try to set the stage for you, the reader
to show you why i have such an appreciation for this masterpiece
maybe you can step into some of my experience...
here is an excerpt from a poem entitled "the lark ascending" by george meredith, from which williams drew his inspiration:
And you shall hear the herb and tree,
The better heart of men shall see,
Shall feel celestially, as long
As you crave nothing save the song.
Was never voice of ours could say
Our inmost in the sweetest way,
Like yonder voice aloft, and link
All hearers in the song they drink:
Our wisdom speaks from failing blood,
Our passion is too full in flood,
We want the key of his wild note
Of truthful in a tuneful throat,
The song seraphically free
Of taint of personality,
So pure that it salutes the suns
The voice of one for millions,
In whom the millions rejoice
For giving their one spirit voice.
to taste the incredulity of this song being performed, might i suggest watching this youtube video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wbcuteYm-EA&feature=related
i'll let the song and poem speak for themselves, because they certainly do
