Extreme Juxtaposition
Found this when looking through some recent journal entries...
6/12/08
Oh the extreme juxtaposition...I was in the metro looking at a magazine with pictures of kids in Indonesia picking up garbage in a dump-close to tears-and I looked out the window to see an ad with a chain on a piggybank saying "Is your savings protected?" Something is wrong here; the two cultures don't translate. In one, people are trying to protect their savings; in another, people are digging through trash to find the financial means to their next meal. I find this irony disheartening and alarming. Somehow, as an American in the comforts of wealth, I have to help bridge the gap. My worldview necessitates concern...how do I translate the message so others can hear it? How do I use my work to promote such a cause?...
Kind of makes you think twice about your schedule-oriented, often self-centered, bustling lifestyle, huh? We were meant to live for something more...
